Beyond being a symbol of virginity for some cultures, the hymen is part of the female reproductive system, which according to the Young Womens Health has as its main characteristic that it is a thin membrane in the shape of a half moon; whereby the blood of the menstrual period comes out.
The virginity is a concept that depends on having or not relations and that has to do with the integrity of the hymen, as this can break into everyday situations, “says sexologist and psychologist Antoni Bolinches.
There are little known hymen characteristics. Discover some.
1. The imperforate hymen. It is the most common cause of obstruction to flow out in women, causing hematocolpos and abdominal mass. Its incidence is estimated between 0.1% and 0.05%, as indicated by a study from the General University Hospital of Ciudad Real.
2. Micro perforated. According to the Young Womens Health, it is a hymen with small holes that allows the passage of little blood. In these cases, women will not be able to use a tampon, as they will experience the sensation of pain and discomfort.
3. It changes. In a newborn this membrane is prominent and thick, but as it grows and as the effect of walking, physical activities and even self-exploration this tissue is becoming thinner and brittle, according to an article published in Psychology Today.
4. Drug consumption. As part of the reproductive system, the hymen is formed during pregnancy; reason why the drug use by the mother can influence a phenomenon: that the baby is born without this membrane, indicates a study published in the National Library of Medicine in the United States.
