There are people (I am one of them) who suffer every time they go out to buy clothes, either because of the tedium that means trying on each garment or because they simply do not find an appropriate style that matches their personality. Well, apparently, Amazon seeks to end this.
Amazon has just presented a patent for the creation of a mirror with mixed reality technology to provide us with an image of us with various types of virtual garments, which in theory would help us choose the right one and make the purchase right there in the mirror , of course on Amazon.
Mixed reality mirror
The patent, which has not yet been granted to the company, tells us about a partially reflecting and partially transmissive mirror, which would be equipped with a series of screens, cameras and projectors that would help create an image of us within a virtual setting, using of course several outfits.
The mirror would be able to scan the environment to determine which objects should be seen as a reflection, in the case of our face, and which can be replaced with virtual images, such as our clothes and the environment that surrounds us. Once you analyze this information, you would be able to show us using different clothes in different scenarios, such as on the beach, street, elegant dinners, or informal parties.
Here we must mention that last year Amazon acquired the company Body Labs for an unconfirmed amount of between 50 and 70 million dollars. This company is responsible for developing artificial intelligence software that relies on real images to create 3D models of human bodies, this to subsequently dress them in a virtual way. And this is where the patent starts to make sense.
This is part of the technology that Body Labs presented in 2015:
This device may sound a bit “futuristic” and even unfeasible, but if we see the latest moves of Amazon in the fashion industry may not sound so crazy. First of all, in March 2017 they launched ‘Outfit Compare’ a function within their mobile application that allows us to compare our dress with that of some celebrities, where we will even receive a rating.
In April 2017 the company launched Amazon Echo Look, a camera equipped with Alexa that takes photographs with the aim of storing our outfits and their periodicity, which obviously can be shared on social networks. In addition, we can count on the help of fashion specialists through ‘Style Check’ to know if we are “in fashion”.
Here of course it should be noted that a patent of this type does not guarantee that in the future we will see a mirror with these capabilities, but it is certainly interesting to see in what kind of innovations Amazon is investing time and resources.
