If we do not have much experience when it comes to assembling a sound system or especially home theater , it is likely that we raise all kinds of doubts about the components we need and especially when it comes time to install and configure them at home.

We have already discussed some of these aspects beforehand, especially with AV receivers and their complex configuration . But still there are aspects that should be highlighted and kept in mind. That is why we started a special about basic mistakes and situations that we must avoidin order to have the best sound quality and not be disappointed despite many times spending a small fortune on the sound equipment.

Do not use the acoustic corrector to maintain the “purity” of the audio

It is one of the issues that generates more debate among fans of HiFi and home movies, as the former will tell us that changing the tone of the sound, equalize, is little less than a sin , while the latter consider that it is completely necessary to achieve the best response. Who has the reason?

Well, if you have a well-equipped listening room with flat response and high-end speakers with flat response, acoustic correction is not necessary. But as this situation does not occur in most cases, we must use it whenever our team offers it to us.

One of the fundamental missions of modern A / V receivers and more and more sound bars is to act as equalizers of our reproduction system , trying to adapt the response of our speakers to the specific acoustic characteristics of the room in which we are going to install them.

THE ACOUSTIC CORRECTOR IS ESSENTIAL TO CORRECT OR MINIMIZE THE SOUND DEFICIENCIES OF THE ROOM

For this, basically two adjustments are made: In the domain of frequency and time. The first is basically to vary the amplitude of the signals in each frequency range depending on the characteristics of the room and the speakers, trying to get a response as flat as possible .

The second takes into account the temporary response of the speakersand the room when making adjustments. That is, it analyzes how long it takes for the sound signals to arrive from the different speakers, analyzing the reflections and phases of each signal to correct them at the listening point so that we hear signals in the same phase.

The result after using the correction system is a sound that ideally eliminates the peaks of bass , has a more balanced response and above all offers an in-phase sound from all the installed speakers, which is essential for a glued audio and to distinguish the effects envelopes clearly.

Buy speakers too small because “the subwoofer will be ordered”

One of the trends that the first multi-channel home cinema systems left us a few years ago was that of the tiny cubes for high frequencies that were complemented by a much larger subwoofer that would take care of the bass. It was not strange to go to a store and find these kinds of systems that promised powerful bass and crystalline highs and probably achieved it, but at the expense of poor or practically nonexistent medium-bass .

It is true that one of the missions of the subwoofer is to offer a low frequency sound that covers the spectrum unattainable by the conventional speakers of our home cinema. But if we take this situation to the extreme and we do all the task of reproduction on the subwoofer cutting too high, in addition to a sound with poor mid frequencies difficult to locate in the room (we will devote a section to this point in another article) we will have a speaker You probably have to work excessively .

This will result in a sound with a higher level of distortion at high volumes that will impoverish the overall response of the equipment. In addition, with a single subwoofer it will be practically impossible to achieve a flat response, so we will have places in the room with many serious and others virtually without them .

IF WE DEPEND ON THE SUBWOOFER IN EXCESS WE WILL HAVE A SOUND WITH POOR MID-LOW FREQUENCIES AND THAT CAN REACH SATURATION

The solution? Well my recommendation is to opt for speakers for the main channels of a size that is not less than 5 inches so that the typical cut that we recommend at 80 Hz can be done without problems (even lower if we can) and do not overload work to subwoofer, while we get to have defined mid-bass frequencies and well directed from the corresponding channel.
