Stress and depression are common in companies: 60% of employees globally claim to have a poor quality of sleep, 42% have difficulty concentrating, says Ilona Boniwell, consultant in positive psychology. And in Mexico, for every depressive episode, 36 days of work are lost, according to data from the World Federation of Mental Health.
With these figures, it is difficult to think that a collaborator escapes having, at some time, a job that does not satisfy him. The problem comes when you are distressed and depressed.
“A sign of being in a bad job, in terms of being depressed, is not being clear how you contribute to an end with your abilities. People who feel ‘wasted’ on their knowledge, or do not know how to make an alliance between what they know and what is required at work, can be if only five years in one place, do not expect more from him or her, ” explains Boniwell, designer of educational programs in France and the United Kingdom.
If only 13% of employees say they are happy and committed to work, says Boniwell with Gallup data, learning to set short goals with ‘sense’ is a proposal to endure and, perhaps, to turn a job that is neither passionate nor pleases
“Setting goals and linking that to something of interest is a strategy to be resilient in many areas, including work,” says Michael Steger, director of the University of Colorado’s Laboratory on Meaning and Quality of Life in the United States.
Positive psychology, a concept established by Martin Seligman in the 1990s, focuses on the work of resilience and the ability to face difficulties. With that premise in mind, Steger points out that a collaborator disconnected with his work needs to think about the next cycle.
That is to say, defining what skill you want to enhance and what personal strength helps you navigate an adverse scenario (for example, having a network of friends, even if the boss is not at work). Then you have to link what you want to strengthen with a goal. What is valuable in this process is to respond to what is wanted in the long run.
“In answering (the question of) why something motivates, the purposes arise. Having life purpose and career beyond one or another company is what helps to be resilient. Not every day things are perfect, but if you know why you do something, what satisfaction you find, it is a way to get ahead of a company that does not help in these goals, “explains Steger.
For your work and mental health
In the article ‘Scaling-up treatment of depression and anxiety: a global return on investment analysis’, published by the journal specialized in psychiatry ‘The Lancet’ in 2016, it is estimated that depression and anxiety generate losses for more than 50,000 millions of workdays in 36 countries, amounting to an economic loss of more than 925,000 million dollars.
Organizations need to redouble their efforts to get the employee to find ways to link their motivation to the company’s goals, as well as certain activities that generate balance. “But this is a myth, something that is hard to come by,” Steger says.
If you are in a job that does not make you happy, specialists suggest keeping a personal agenda that involves the following factors:
1. Be realistic with employment, not idealize. Repeatedly, the employee says he does not feel comfortable with the job because of the resulting job, or because the boss or the company does not respect his personal projects.
The answer to this is to have no illusions that that will change. The collaborator is the one who needs to set his balance, his life schedule, define how much he works in the office and home, with what results and, above all, how he will raise the boss that living hyper connected is not always possible or favorable.
The difficulty of this is that it requires the employee to take responsibility for aspects that are not always wanted to face. “Delivery dates are the challenge, but if there is not time to nurture other activities, stress and anxiety will emerge,” adds the director of the Quality of Life laboratory at the University of Colorado.
2. Improve your value proposition. A bad job situation (for salary, the environment, any other aspect) is also an invitation for the employee to determine what drives him to be there. And then define a strategy for better integration or change of company. However “the common thing is to complain and that is the kind of mind to reprogram,” Steger mentions.
The perfect offers do not exist, what exists is a work activity with which you can link from the personal to find scenarios of motivation. If the job is lousy, maybe there is another area to grow or social projects with which to link. If there is a good relationship with bosses and Human Resources, you can even redesign the position.
But to reach all that requires self-knowledge and be productive in that job until a new offer arrives.
3. Expand your skills instead of self-boycott. Happiness does not depend on the environment at 100%, only 10% is attributable to external factors. Do not like the project, does not mean there has to be enmity with the team.
Before changing jobs, make sure you learn a competition that has been linked to that bad scenario, for example, communicate.
An employee may be frustrated with their projects because they do not understand their contribution or salary. But if, instead of isolating himself, his ability to better interrelate with the boss and others, not only has gained something that can be applied in other jobs, also opens at that moment the possibility of asking the company to be part of initiatives where there may be a greater personal and work connection.
