In the United States, one out of every seven deaths due to traffic accidents is caused by collisions, so one of the priorities of General Motors for this 2018 is the safety of pedestrians and therefore, they show their new outdoor air bag patent.
According to Tom Wilkerson, spokesman for GM’s security area, “Our pedestrian airbag could become an essential security measure for the cars of the future.”
Although there are not many details of this new airbag, General Motors could be the first company in the continent to patent an external airbag. The idea originated in 2014 but until a few weeks ago it is public.
Recall that Volvo did it five years ago and now incorporated it into the V40, that frontal exterior air bag serves for a speed of 20 to 50 kilometers per hour and covers the A pillars. When the impact of a pedestrian occurs, the bag of air is activated leaving the back of the chest, covering a little more than a third of the windshield, avoiding head injuries and other injuries.
