Lindows is back: Linspire 7.0 and Freespire 3.0 released

Many will remember Lindows, the operating system whose function was to deaden the transition from Windows to Linux. In other words, use a Linux system but with the possibility of running Windows applications. Be simpler to use for users, in short. There were controversies, with complaints from Microsoft and in the end the software giant took over the company and changed the name to Linspire. However, the process stopped and it has now been a decade.

The heirs of Lindows

Now, after more than 10 years since the last edition of Linspire was launched, a new version has arrived. Actually, PC / OpenSystems LLC, which is responsible for the development of Black Lab Linux, has acquired the trademarks of Linspire.

Although the new version, Linspire 6.0 , is still a commercial product like the previous versions, it does not use the previous code.

The new version is derived from Ubuntu and includes several types of software such as VLC, Chrome, Wine, etc. It is an LTS version, which will remain compatible until 2025. It also comes with an email and 12 month support. The other services offered with the license are custom ISO generation, installation, free upgrade, 10% discount on hardware purchases, etc.

Freespire 3.0

In case we want to use reincarnated Lindows, to call it that, without spending a penny, there is also another option. Freespire 3.0 is a free Linux distribution version that does not contain the components that need the license fee. It comes with Firefox Quantum, Parole Media Player, Abiword, Pinta, etc. Freespire 3.0 is still compatible until 2021.

In its official page we can find information about its download, license and price. There are different prices depending on the total licenses we want to buy. In addition, it allows us to choose the way in which we want to install it. We can download it, for example, for a Live USB.

Many users choose to install one of the many Linux distributions that we have available. There are many variants and they can be adapted to different users. For most beginners, sometimes the subject of applications and software in general becomes difficult. Therefore, these distributions commented in the article can be a good solution.

Safety

Of course, in any case safety is important. Although Linux is known to be a more secure operating system than Windows, it is not exempt from threats. The reason is that with fewer users, there are also fewer cybercriminals who target it. In a previous article we talked about some programs and security tools for Linux that could be useful for users.

These programs must be updated to the latest version. This way we make sure that we are prepared to face the most recent possible threats. But above all, common sense is important. As we know, some types of malware such as ransomware or hidden crypto mining have increased a lot in recent times. Almost always, user interaction is required to execute. That is why it is important to be always alert.
