US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has been given the go-ahead by the UK’s agency for medicines and health products

Viagra, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, is going to be licensed for sale without a prescription from 2018 in the UK, a first in the world, said manufacturer Pfizer.

The US pharmacy giant said in a statement released Tuesday night received the green light from the UK agency of medicines and health products (MHRA).

The famous little blue pill, reserved for men over the age of 18, will be available without prescription from the spring of 2018 in the country.

The treatment will be called Viagra Connect and contain the same active ingredient, sildenafil, as the prescription version.

Potential buyers, however, will have to answer a few questions from the pharmacist before receiving the treatment.

Men who have serious heart problems, liver or kidney problems, or other treatments that may interact with Viagra, will still need a doctor’s prescription.

“We hope this new opportunity to buy real pharmacy treatment will reduce the likelihood of men turning to ineffective and dangerous copies from illicit sources,” said Berkeley Phillips, a Pfizer manager for the UK .

The MHRA has stated that erectile dysfunction treatments are a prime target for fraudsters and claims to have seized more than 50 million pounds in recent years of counterfeit products.

Marketed since 1998 and long accustomed to record sales, Viagra has suffered copies and anticipation of the arrival of generics soon in the United States.

Viagra sales in 2016 reached more than $ 1.5 billion, according to Pfizer’s annual results.
